Lava Tour

An adventurous ride from the Riding Centre into the lava fields surrounding Mt. Helgafell volcano to the old Kaldársel sheep corral or to Lake Hvaleyrarvatn through lava fields and across beautiful hillsides. View rough lava fields and look for different formations in the lava, maybe you will be able to spot a troll or two. The beautiful Bláfjöll Mountains tower above on the horizon. All riding is on excellent riding paths.

Riding skills: Beginners
Duration: 3 hours (1,5-2 hours riding)
Departures: Daily at 10:00 and 14:00. Transfers from hotels and guesthouses to the Riding Center start 8:45 and 12:45. Transfers back to hotels and guesthouses start at 12:15 and 16:15.
Included in package: Transfers to and from the Riding Centre, horse riding as per itinerary, riding helmets, rubber boots, and rainwear or a warm outfit during the ride.English and Scandinavian speaking guidance.

Viking Tour

We start with an introductional ride into the lava fields surrounding Mt. Helgafell volcano to the old Kaldársel sheep corral or to Lake Hvaleyrarvatn through lava fields and across beautiful hillsides, getting acquainted with horses and surroundings. After a nice lunch at the riding centre we head straight into the adventure of exploring the Reykjanes preservation area. Cross the Kaldá River, ride around the old volcano Mt. Helgafell or into the beautiful Heiðmörk Nature Park with all its strange lava formations and the ancient Gjáarrétt sheep corral, made from lava stones. View rough lava fields and look for different formations in the lava, maybe you will be able to spot a troll or two. Choice of route depends on the season and weather.

Riding skills: Intermediate riders (Comfortable and in control at the walk, moderate length trots (tölt) and short canters).
Duration: 6-7 hours (4,5-5 hours riding)
Departures: Daily at 10:00. Transfer from hotels and guesthouses starts at 8:45. Transfer back to hotels and guesthouses starts at 16:15.

Please note that you cannot take any backpacks or bags with you on the ride but there are safety boxes at the Riding Centre where you can store your valuables.

Riding Centre:

The Riding Centre is set in beautiful surroundings just outside the town of Hafnarfjörður, about 10 minutes drive from Reykjavík. The facilities and the fascinating area provide endless opportunities of riding, hiking and other outdoor activities.

We welcome individuals, families and all kinds of groups who want to enjoy themselves outdoors. The facilities offer people an easy way to enjoy our horses and the experience of our staff will ensure the safety of all our guests. The locker room of the Riding Centre is well equipped. All customers are provided with warm overalls, raingear, riding boots and helmets in their sizes. The Íshestar staff takes pride in finding horses to suit individual needs as well as secure the safety of everybody.
