Amazing West

Rift Valley, Glacier, Hot Springs, Waterfalls, Lava caves

This amazing tour takes you on a fantastic journey through the western highlands away from the main tourist traffic. We begin our tour at the Þingvellir National Park, the site of the ancient Viking parliament dating back to the 10th century and a great place to study the geology of Iceland as Þingvellir are one of only two sites in the world where the effects of two major tectonic plates drifting apart can be observed. This is where we leave the conventional tourists track and head for the Kaldidalur mountain pass through the rugged wilderness up to the second largest glacier in iceland, Langjökull. In the afternoon we head towards the west coast and continue our adventure by exploring part of the Surtshellir lava caves and the interesting waterfalls of Hraunfossar and Barnafoss, but these wonders are all situated in the Hallmundarhraun lava field. Our last stop before heading back to Reykjavik is Europes largest hot spring, Deildartunguhver where an impressive amount of 180 liters of boiling water continuously pour out of the ground every second.

*In winter and spring we might have to alter the itinerary due to difficult conditions on the Kaldidalur mountain pass.
